Garbage Disposal Jammed?

Before submitting a maintenance request, try these simple steps to get your garbage disposal working again.

Watch the Quick Guide

Follow the video below for a quick demonstration of how to troubleshoot a jammed garbage disposal.

Step-by-Step

Try These Steps First

Most minor garbage disposal jams can be resolved by following these steps.

1

Turn Off the Disposal

Make sure the garbage disposal switch is completely turned off before attempting to troubleshoot the unit.

2

Press the Reset Button

Look underneath the sink and locate the reset button on the bottom of the garbage disposal. Press it firmly.

3

Turn On Cold Water

Turn on the cold water and briefly switch on the disposal to see if it begins operating normally.

4

Release the Jam

If the disposal is humming but not spinning, turn it off. If your unit has a wrench opening underneath, use the appropriate wrench to gently loosen the jam.

5

Test the Disposal

Remove the wrench, turn on cold water, and briefly test the disposal. If it works normally, the issue may be resolved.

Important Safety Notice

Never put your hand inside the garbage disposal. If an object is visible and can be safely reached, use tongs or pliers. Always make sure the disposal is turned off before attempting to remove an obstruction.
