Before submitting a maintenance request, try these simple steps to get your garbage disposal working again.
Follow the video below for a quick demonstration of how to troubleshoot a jammed garbage disposal.
Most minor garbage disposal jams can be resolved by following these steps.
Make sure the garbage disposal switch is completely turned off before attempting to troubleshoot the unit.
Look underneath the sink and locate the reset button on the bottom of the garbage disposal. Press it firmly.
Turn on the cold water and briefly switch on the disposal to see if it begins operating normally.
If the disposal is humming but not spinning, turn it off. If your unit has a wrench opening underneath, use the appropriate wrench to gently loosen the jam.
Remove the wrench, turn on cold water, and briefly test the disposal. If it works normally, the issue may be resolved.
Never put your hand inside the garbage disposal. If an object is visible and can be safely reached, use tongs or pliers. Always make sure the disposal is turned off before attempting to remove an obstruction.
Please stop troubleshooting and contact us if you experience any of the following:
The motor runs but the disposal does not spin.
The unit repeatedly shuts off after being reset.
Water is leaking from the disposal or plumbing.
Turn the unit off immediately and do not use it.
